As long as you have updated to Zoom 5.8.3, you will see the participants' profile pictures even if the person you are chatting with is in a previous version of Zoom. For example, I'm in Zoom 5.8.3 and three other people are in the Zoom meeting on the prior version. Two have a profile picture and the third person does not. I will see the other two participants' profile pictures. The third person doesn't have a profile picture, so I will not see their image in chat.

Zoom profile picture now shows in meeting chats
Zoom now features "Profile photos for in-meeting chat." When chatting in a Zoom meeting, participants' profile pictures now appear. If the participant doesn't have a profile picture, their initials appear. This is part of Zoom's update in October 2021. The version is 5.8.3, and it works with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
