What is the Middle Class and Are You in the Middle Class?

What is the middle class and are you in the middle class?  To figure out if you are in the middle class, we need to know the median household income, how many people are in your household, and where you live.

The starting point is the median household income. We get this number from the US Census Bureau. The range for the middle class is 2/3 of the median household income, and 2. As percentages that would be 67% and 200%. I show this in Excel. Two other items figure into the middle class are how many people are in your household and where you live. Having 3 people in your household is a lot different than having six people in your household. Living in Marietta, GA is way less expensive than living in San Franciso, CA, or New York City. So, the number of household members and where you live to tie into the middle class and make the middle tier move.
